How are pearls formed?

Pearls are among the most cherished and unique precious gemstones in the world of jewelry, as well as a timeless staple you can always rely on. Understanding their marvelous and enigmatic world will allow you to appreciate collections like Mabi Blet by MUMIT from a different perspective.

How are natural pearls created?

Pearls form in mollusks, with fate and chance playing a fundamental role, as these natural wonders are not present in all oysters or mussels, but rather emerge as a defense mechanism. Who would have thought that such a fantastic and special element would arise as a "shield" against a threat.

The creation of a pearl is as unique as its shape and begins with something as simple as a grain of sand or a parasite entering the mollusk. From this moment, it can take between 2 and 4 years until the unique and unrepeatable pearl is created. Each and every one of the pearls set in MUMIT jewelry are of natural origin, always combined with 18K yellow gold with the aim of creating jewels that enhance the beauty of this wonderful precious gem. Our personal nod to a *must-have* that reinvents itself year after year.

Types of pearls

This particular and characteristic world is in turn composed of various types of pearls which, as we can read in depth in "What types of pearls exist?", are divided into two:

  • Pearls of natural origin.
  • Pearls of non-natural origin. This is a type of synthetic pearl created in laboratories that has no value and is not mounted in any MUMIT design.

Natural origin pearls

All natural pearls share a similar origin, with only one factor varying: human intervention. This is how the well-known cultured pearls are created. Their formation arises from human intervention, as those responsible for pearl cultivation will be delegated to insert the "irritant" inside the mollusk. All natural pearls are considered precious stones, and unlike gemstones, pearls do not need to be polished for use in jewelry.

At MUMIT, as fine jewelry manufacturers, we only use the magic of natural pearls in our creations, bringing to life jewels such as the original Mabi Blet chain ear cuff earrings in 18k yellow gold, which, with natural pearls, exude that aura of elegance and authenticity that distinguishes us. We are aware that pearl earrings will always be the most successful choice to elevate any outfit with an extra touch of contemporary elegance.

Choosing a pearl jewel means choosing a timeless basic

Given the numerous questions that constantly invade our minds when choosing a pearl, such as "how long does it take an oyster to make a pearl?" or "how are natural pearls formed?", we provided an official answer, and now, we give you our MUMIT opinion: Should a magician reveal their tricks? Pearls are pure magic; they are the only element used in jewelry that exudes holographic reflections capable of eclipsing, and that's what truly matters—the magic! This, in turn, results in jewelry that, with its exquisite combination with 18K gold, brings to life unique collections designed for today's woman: natural, elegant, and modern.
