If you've always wanted to know what determines the quality of a diamond, you're in the perfect place to find out. At Mumit, we are specialists in natural diamonds, and we always recommend that all our customers have some basic knowledge before making their purchase. That's why we wrote an article dedicated to how to evaluate a diamond ring. This way, the user becomes aware of and appreciates the jewel they are acquiring.
Mumit natural diamond jewelry shines with unparalleled strength and dynamism thanks to meeting very high-quality standards. As we explain when discussing how to evaluate a diamond ring, all diamonds adhere to the 4 Cs and are exclusively selected for each setting, where our jewelers always seek to enhance their natural beauty, their hypnotic sparkle of light, and their magic through our designs.
Additionally, at Mumit, we use pavé in our rings, which is a sophisticated technique that enhances their brilliance, creating extraordinary 18K gold pavé rings.
What are the 4 Cs of a diamond?
All diamonds have distinctive characteristics that are appreciated thanks to the four universally recognized quality criteria, popularly known as the “4 Cs,” which stand for Carat, Colour, Clarity, and Cut. The score in these properties determines the quality of the diamond.
Carat
Carat is the unit of measurement for diamonds; that is, the weight of a diamond is measured in carats, abbreviated as Ct. 1 carat equals 0.20 grams.
Diamonds are sold by price per carat, meaning this price varies exponentially with the weight of the gemstone. It's easy to understand why diamonds become more expensive as their size increases: nature provides far fewer large gems.
For example, a 1.5-carat diamond is three times the weight of a 0.5-carat diamond, but its price can be five to seven times higher, as it is a very exceptional and rare size to find.
Colour

Colour refers to the transparency of a diamond. It is one of the most important characteristics, as the more colorless or transparent the diamond, the more beautiful, rare, and valuable it will be. To determine its color, there is a color grading scale from D (the best) to Z (the worst) established by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and internationally accepted. At Mumit, we only select diamonds whose color falls between D and G to ensure their maximum brilliance.
Clarity

Clarity refers to the tiny natural imperfections present in all diamonds. These imperfections, called inclusions, are evaluated through microscopic observation of the diamond and are categorized according to the following table. At Mumit, we only work with diamonds with a minimum clarity of VS1 to ensure optimal brilliance.
Cut

This criterion refers to how the facets or faces of the diamond interact with light. The symmetry, dimensions, and polish determine the beauty of the diamond. Mumit diamonds are cut following very demanding quality standards, achieving a grade between excellent and good.
Diamonds can also be cut into different shapes: oval, princess, heart, pear… with the brilliant cut being the most well-known and recommended for enhancing the diamond's properties.
There is also the round cut for diamonds and other types of gems, which can be seen in round-cut engagement rings. Besides being the most popular shape, it also provides the maximum possible brilliance to diamonds.
At Mumit, we pay special attention to the importance of tracing the origin of our diamonds, always ensuring that they come from countries that fully participate in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. Furthermore, all our diamonds are certified by the GIA laboratory, guaranteeing that every diamond set in our creations has a color grade between D and G, as well as a minimum clarity of VS1.
